Have you ever found that it’s always the smallest things in life that cause so much passion in people? In fact, many have argued that the reason behind the Roman Empire’s seemingly unstoppable spread throughout Europe was originally to control the bulk of olive production in the region due to the value of its oil. As for me – well – there are plenty of olives I have tasted during my sourcing trips that are tasty enough for a Roman emperor! For inspiration, take a look at the latest addition to our range – Plump green olives filled with fiery red hot chillies not for the faint hearted!!

The inspiration for this product came during my latest sourcing trip and no it wasn’t trekking through the olive groves of Greece or the dirt tracks of northern turkey it was a little more down to earth, while sat over a pint in a London pub with a 6 ft 4 man from Greece. Don’t get me wrong I’ve been to Greece, I’ve trekked through Turkey, but sometimes you find just the right product in the strangest location.

Olive from unearthed

While olive trees have spread throughout the world, I focus my sourcing trips on the Mediterranean basin where I find the best and most flavourful samples. Selection is based on a number of key factors including cleanliness, maturity and variety. Olives picked a week apart can often produce surprisingly different flavours. An interesting fact for you is that olive trees may live to be 1500 years old, and the average life span is about 500 years so no need to worry about us running out of olives! And due to this I am sure that here at unearthed we will continue to bring new, exciting and delicious olives to the UK.

HOT CHILLI OLIVESHot Chilli Olives are the latest product to be added to the unearthed range.

Our HOT Chilli olives are now available in Waitrose stores, priced at £2.95. They are green olives stuffed with hot red chillies and we reckon they are one of the hottest things you’ll find in any supermarket. Be adventurous and give them a go!

Some little Chilli facts for the heat-loving amongst you:

  • Hot Chilli Olives in bowlAccording to the Guinness book of records, the Bhut Jolokia of Assam is the world’s hottest chilli pepper, with an official Scoville rating of 1,001,304 , nearly doubling the heat of the previous record holder, the Red Savina with a rating of just 577,000. 25 year old Anandita Dutta Tamuly of Assam holds the record for eating these chilies, consuming a mouth-blistering 60 Bhut Jolokia in just 2 minutes!
  • Big Jim, a chilli hailing from New Mexico, is in the Guinness Book of Records as producing the biggest chilli pods, frequently producing chillies over a foot in length – quite impressive for plant that grows no more than 2 foot tall!

Let us know just how hot you think our hot chilli olives are, and give us a rating from ice-cool to supernova! We’d also like to hear your suggestions for putting the flames out afterwards…?
